180 degree turnaround

Niedawne koncerty zespołu Black The recent Black Sabbath Concerts in Poland were being opened by Tiamat. Johan Edlund, the band's leader met with one of our coops in Wrocław to talk about the beginnings of his career, Tiamat's stylistc's metamorphosis, the fascinations on Pink Floyd music, polish audience and about the devil...

You were starting in a group called Treblinka. How do you remember it?

It lasted only a few days, and didn't give any resoults - except one record. Treblinka, after the rearranging of members, became Tiamat. A this time that band means nothing to me. I try to live in the present, not the past.

We aren't interested in things that happened in past. Even if it were good and atrractive to people. We've made a 180 degree turnaround. Today we create music which we like, and we like the music we create. That's why "wildhoney" is sort of a perfect album for us. We aren't interested in what the fans are saying. We do ours. The most important for us is to be happy of what we do.

What meaning had "Wildhoney's" succes for you?

It was a nice thing. We're happy that people buy our records, also the older ones. We weren't scared by this big leap on the metal's top, it was rather pleasantly suprising. But I want to make It clear. We want to do what we like to do. We will never submit to the pressions of the market.

You often tell about your fascination about Pink Floyd. Have this music had any effect on what you do in the present?

Yes, It's true - Our whole band loves Pink Floyd. I can even say I worship them-For me, they're nr1. We're being under their heavy influence, but we don't copy their music. We try to give Tiamat its own, recognizeable sound, to make it OUR own music.

You've already been in Poland. How do you remember those shows? Where do you like to play best?

We have few favourite countries - Poland is one of them. Here the audience is just great, it reacts very spontaneously on what we do. I like to come here, I feel good in here. Before the concert i already know that it will be a very great experience for me, a great concert. I also like playing in Germany very much because it's our biggest market. The States? We've played a tour with Black Sabbath in USA this year, but unfortunately there aren't many people who buy our records there. I don't like the atmosphere in that country at all. No, States aren't definetly our favourite country.

How did it happened that you were in the same tour as Black Sabbath?

I don't entirely know how did it happened-there were many people involved in the organization of this tour - It was their idea.

How do you comment the decision of moving the concerts of Tiamat and Black Sabbath from Hala Ludowa to Ślęża Stadium - they did it because of the reason that you happen to be satanists, and the pope is going to visit the place in two years?

Catholics should start looking for another planet

What about satanists?

Hmm. Depends how you define satanism. But if you ask me about my relation to Satan, then I guess I'd say It's at least honest. He sets the cause clear - he craves what is worst in us...

At the end of our conversation I'd like to ask when should we expect your next album?

It'll be ready in autumn next year. I can't realy say too much about it, the works had just begun. I create a lot during this tour - Really interesting compositions are being made, maybe, the next album there will be a place for the songs written in Poland...
